Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate 2012 is a flagship 100% Nebbiolo red wine from Roberto Voerzio, a top-tier estate in Piedmont, Italy. This wine comes from the prestigious Brunate Cru vineyard in La Morra, renowned for its extremely low production volume, intense concentration, and powerful aging potential.
Winery Winemaking Process
Winemaker Roberto Voerzio is a legendary representative of the Barolo Modernist movement. His management of the vineyards is almost obsessive; each vine yields only a very small amount of fruit (approximately 500 grams per vine) in exchange for unparalleled ripeness and fruit flavor.
In terms of winemaking, this 2012 vintage fermented in stainless steel tanks, then matured for 24 months in oak barrels (a combination of small French oak barrels and large traditional oak barrels), followed by 8 months of rest in stainless steel tanks, and finally 8 months of bottle aging before release.
Core Flavors and Characteristics
- Aroma: A vibrant ruby to garnet red hue. Upon pouring, it unfolds a complex aroma of deep rose petals, black cherry preserves, tar, cigar ash, toasted herbs, and aged leather.
- Palmistry: Full-bodied and juicy with a satisfying chewiness. While exhibiting pronounced, firm, and deep tannins, the texture is silky smooth with a long finish.
- Professional Rating: Classic wine critic Robert Parker (WA) awarded this vintage a high score of 96 points, attesting to its exceptional quality.
- At its peak drinking window: 2012 was an exceptional vintage for Piedmont. After more than a decade of bottle aging, its originally powerful tannins have become rounded and integrated.
- Decanting time: It is recommended to open the bottle and decant for at least 1.5 to 2 hours before drinking, or use a decanter, to allow its deep aromas of tar, truffle, and leather to fully unfold.
