Moët & Chandon MCIII is a top-tier luxury champagne from the renowned French champagne brand Moët & Chandon. Breaking with tradition, it is the first champagne to perfectly blend base wines aged in three different containers—metal tanks, wooden barrels, and glass bottles—from multiple vintages, resulting in an exceptionally complex, rich, and elegant flavor profile.
Winemaking Process and Characteristics
- Triple-material aging: Combining base wines aged in stainless steel tanks, oak barrels, and bottles.
- Multi-vintage blending: Incorporating the essence of multiple excellent vintages to create a profound structure.
- Flavor profile: Aromas of candied citrus, dried fig, and dates; a palate that is both powerful and delicate.
- Collector's value: Considered a pioneering work in the world of Champagne, it is highly sought after by collectors and discerning wine connoisseurs worldwide.
Core Blending Technique: The Three Strata
The soul of MCIII lies in breaking conventions by perfectly blending base wines aged across different vintages in three different containers:
- First Strata: Metal – Approximately 37.5% to 40% Base Wine: A rich, warm-climate 2003 vintage still wine (half Pinot Noir and half Chardonnay), aged in stainless steel tanks. Purpose: To establish a bright, intense foundation of ripe summer fruit flavors and vibrancy for the Champagne.
- Second Strata: Wood – Approximately 37.5% to 40% Base Wine: A blend of Grand Vintage still wines from 1998, 2000, and 2002, which were briefly aged in large oak barrels before being transferred to stainless steel tanks. Purpose: To impart a full-bodied, silky texture and a warm, autumnal dimension to the wine.
- The third layer: Glass – approximately 20% to 25% base wine: Top vintage Champagnes from Moët & Chandon's Grand Vintage Collection (including 1993, 1998, and 1999), which have been aged in glass bottles with lees for 5 to 10 years, then re-added after disgorging.
- Function: Contributes deep toasty and roasted aromas, solidifies the mature and mellow finish, and magically preserves the Champagne's mineral vitality.
