Penfolds RWT Bin 798 2003 (with original single-timber box) is a signature wine from Penfolds, Australia's top winery. RWT stands for "Red Winemaking Trial," an unconventional winemaking project launched by the winery in 1995, which has now become a classic alongside the flagship "Grange."
Production Method: 100% Barossa Shiraz; fermented in stainless/seasoned oak, matured 12–18 months in French oak barriques/hogsheads (significant new oak).
Style Positioning: Unlike the traditional Grange style, which uses American oak barrels and blends from multiple appellations, RWT focuses on showcasing the top-quality Shiraz from a single appellation (Barossa Valley), and is aged entirely in French oak barrels, pursuing a richer, more refined, and modernly luxurious palate.
Vintage Performance (2003): The 2003 Barossa Valley experienced drought and extreme heat, resulting in reduced yields. However, the final Shiraz harvest was highly concentrated, with excellent ripeness, ripe fruit aromas, and harmonious tannins. This vintage was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (70% of which were new barrels).
Collector's Packaging: This version comes with an official single-timber box, which not only facilitates long-term aging but also exudes a sense of luxury and prestige, making it ideal for business gifts, anniversaries, or personal fine wine collections.
Aroma and Palate: According to Wine-Searcher experts, the 2003 vintage exhibits pronounced aromas of black cherry, spices, pencil lead, smoke, and vanilla. It is round and elegant, full-bodied, with an undertone of ripe berries and dark chocolate.
Aging Status: Major wine critics (such as Robert Parker's team) have given this vintage a high score of approximately 91/100. After more than 20 years of bottle aging, the tannins are now extremely silky, placing it at its peak drinking potential.
